City and communities are today more than ever challenged to gain insights into the current situation of each district and stretch of road. Environmental data, traffic conditions, parking space management, demand for internet access or the current security situation are topics for which city administration and citizens need information as precise and current as possible. Here, good old street lighting are the ideal starting point for the collection of relevant data with suitable sensors. Integrated multifunctional street lighting is the key to the digital transformation and therefore to smart cities and communities.
Urban Lighting Innovations delivers tailor-made solution packages to upgrade your lighting in public areas according to the worldwide first standard for intelligent street lighting: DIN SPEC 91347. Within [ui!] GROUP, Urban Lighting Innovations stands for the consistent implementation of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities’ vision towards „1.000.000 Humble Lampposts“. Enhancing energy efficiency and transparency of air quality paired with new business models for parking space management and increased traffic flow, are just some of the new areas of application.
The experience and knowledge of the whole of [ui!] GROUP is utilized in Urban Lighting Innovations from projects in Australia, Great Birtain and Germany. Already, renowned manufactures from the field of street lighting and innovative start-ups are partners for the implementation of DIN SPEC 91347. In addition, [ui!] the urban institute® ensures that the data, which is collected through the open urban platform UrbanPulse, is accessible cost-effectively and efficiently. So that new services can be created by everyone interested and add value to the city.
„Today we accomplished another important step for the digitalisation of cities. With Urban Lighting Innovations GmbH we combine our expertise to offer smart lighting solutions to suppliers and operators of street lighting world wide.
With the founding of Urban Lighting Innovations, [ui!] signals as the market leader of integrated smart city solutions, that the competencies in the field of integrated multifunctional street lighting are being focused and expanded on a global level. [ui!] already supports customers in Germany and around the world in the digital transformation of street lighting. Under the chairmanship of Prof. Lutz Heuser, CEO and founder of [ui!], a German standard (DIN SPEC 91347) has been established as the first of its kind in 2016."
Air pollution and noise are among the key issues cities have to deal with. With our environmental sensors you can collect various environmental data and make them available through the [ui!] COCKPIT.
[ui!] ENVIRONMENT provides a fully integrated solution to manage the environment of your city. It uses low cost multi-sensor node solutions (including WiFi, LTE networks), which can be rapidly deployed to existing street furniture. Gain transparency of your air data as the foundation of enhanced well-being and traffic planning.
[ui!] ENVIRONMENT supports you with the collection of real-time data through calibrated sensors. Measuring temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, pollutants (CO, CO2, O3, SO2) as well as fine dust and noise.
The platform [ui!] UrbanPulse prepares rich statistical data on traffic, air pollution and light. It further provides support for reposting and analysis.
You can use this enhanced data for further investigations: for instance on open data platforms or for commercial services.
Thus, you can get the data so your city can avoid penalties from crossing pollution thresholds by effectively monitoring existing and new sensors & devices.
Growing urban population in dense spaces has led to problems in traffic, infrastructure, efficiency and the environment as the existing infrastructure reaches its limits.
The combination of old and new infrastructure becomes apparent in street lighting. The masts of street lights are a ubiquitous infrastructure element in public space. With its electricity supply and vertical component, the mast, it can be the basis for a multitude of services in the future. Instead of simply providing light.
Street lighting is the logical starting point for the development of an urban digital infrastructure.
This means more than including LEDs or adaptive lighting to save energy costs. In a smart city, street lighting masts are transformed to digital multifunctional masts. With its electricity supply and telecommunication connection, a multitude of components, such as sensors can be attached to existing street lighting.
This functionalities could include public Wi-Fi as well as environmental sensors for e.g. data on air quality, support for traffic management or electric charging integrated in the mast.
This creates opportunities for the connection and usage of data and therefore especially new business models. At the same time new requirements for data semantic, security and privacy are tackled.
Standard DIN SPEC 91347
Currently, in various areas of the smart city and its infrastructures many different standardisation projects exist.
There is, at least on national level, no integrated view on norms and standards. Decision makers lack reliable guidance which connects the ecological, with the social and the economic points of view.
The standard DIN SPEC 91347 was developed to close this gap. It was written with a group of members form the SMART CITY Forum complemented by additional companies and initiated by Lutz Heuser (CEO [ui!] GROUP).
The standard offers an overview of the wide range of uses for integrated multifunctional street lighting, in synergy with the urban infrastructure. The objective is to ensure the interoperability between different technologies and domains in consideration of existing standards.
In addition, missing standards should be identifies and fitting standardisation projects initiated. The focus lies on open standards to ensure, for instance, the data exchange between different domains and cities.
[ui!] AUSTRALIA installed their first locally-developed multifunctional lampposts in Cairns.
Close to the Botanic Gardens [ui!] installed six [ui] SmartReady poles. Three of this poles have Public WIFI, Environmental Sensors, CCTV, and Emergency calling installed. The other three poles are prepared and ready to install new Smart City hardware in the future.
All six [ui!] SmartReady poles have high quality LED luminaires with smart light management hardware controlled over motion sensors.
This system allows you to control the brightness of the luminaire. In the night you can set the level of brightness down to 10% and can save energy, Co2 and cost. Once the motion sensor detects a person the brightness will rise up on 100% in two seconds.
The sensorsystem can distinguish between people and small native animals, and the light levels are not raised unless people are detected. All brightness levels can be set up by the client for highest flexibility.
[ui!] SmartReady Poles are 85%-locally sourced from Australian companies. SmartReady poles are power coated galvanised steel for strength and durability, and are flange-mounted.
[ui!] SmartReady poles are manufactured in Australia to Australian specifications, to stand up to Australian conditions. With [ui!] SmartReady Poles you can be confident that you’re putting your city’s best face forward.
Already more than 70% of the European Union‘s population lives in urban area. This trend has far reaching consequences for energy production, distribution and use, mobility and traffic as well as information and communication technologies within cities and municipalities.
Our approach is to free these domains from their isolation and connect them with each other. This INTEGRATION enables new services and business models.
Cities have big amounts of information, which can – meaningfully used – create added values for society. It is key to make this data available for REUSE and REPURPOSE.
